Chennai 28 - Special Visitor Review
Chennai 600028

Hi Behindwoods,

The following is my review on the recent blockbuster Chennai 600028. I hope to get it published in the visitor's review section.

Chennai 600028 – Best entertainer of the year

If Tamil movie buffs and critics start to think of the most impressive and off-beat films released this year, the line up of films would be Paruthi Veeran, Mozhi….! For them, my suggestion would be…Folks! Please put Chennai 600028 on top of the list.

As a critic, it has been a very tough job writing review for this movie as I have already enjoyed watching this movie more than 5 times. Debutant director Venkat Prabhu has done a fabulous job in making this film look realistic, subtle, interesting and what not. Producer S P Charan needs special mention as it requires lots of calculated risks in producing a film based on Tennis Ball Cricket and that too after burning his fingers badly in the movie Mazhai. Don't worry Charan, hope you've got ten times the amount you had lost in Mazhai through this wonderful movie Chennai 600028.

Chennai 600028
The entire plot of the film revolves around the cricket team SHARKS belonging to the locality Visalatchi Thottam(actually Sandhanai Kalvai) in Chennai 600028. Do they have the potential and talent to beat Rockers CC of Royapuram in 2006 Tennis Ball Cricket tournament is what the film is all about. SP Balasubramaniam begins the movie introducing all the team members in SHARKS in a very innovative manner though not a new attempt in Tamil Cinema.

Raghu of Rockers shifts to Chennai 600028 as his Dad has got transferred to R A Puram Police station. Now the obvious thing is how Raghu handles the gang SHARKS residing in Visalatchi Thottam. R J Shiva (Karthik) who is the Captain of SHARKS team and a brother to a local Goondah has done the job so perfect that his dialogue delivery and expressions in all the scenes are so subtle and realistic that we have a feel there are many such characters in the society like him.
Seenu(Premji Amaran), owner of a petty shop in the locality and the so-called all rounder has done the role of a comedian to near perfection whether it is timely delivery of 'Enna Kodumai ..Sir' or patching the team members when there is a rift, he excels in all scenes. Premji Amaran has handled the tough job of composing the comical background score for him and also for the entire movie. The background score has been tremendous whether it is cricket match or an action sequence or a romantic scene, Premji has performed really well.

Real tough job in making these movies would be writing the screenplay and Venkat Prabhu has proven that he is one among the best upcoming script writers in the industry. Venkat Prabhu and his team have worked really hard to make sure that each and every frame in the film looks so real and interesting. Kudos to Venkat and his team!

Yuvan Shankar Raja has been very instrumental in giving his best to this movie. The title song is good. 'Jalsa' is already a chartbuster and 'Saroja Saman Nikalo' rocks and once it hits the small screen it is bound to rule the state at least for few months. SPB's Yaaro is a real pleasant number.
Also Charan's version of Yaaro can be applauded. The duet for Arvind Aakash( previously Harvinder Singh) and the newcomer Christine has been very well scored by Yuvan and captured by Shakthi Saravanan. Composing the song 'Natpukkulle' is an effortless job for Yuvan as he has already mastered that art given his previous record.

All other artistes in the film have done a neat job right starting with Ilavarasu, Nithin Sathya(Pazhani), Jai(Raghu), Ambulance driver Ezhumalai, Mechanic Gopi, Prasanna(Shan), Ranjith( Body Builder Imran), characters Arivu and Uday. Director Agathiyan's daughter Vijayalakshi makes her debut in this film as Selvi (sister to Nithin Sathya in the movie). RJ Shiva falls in love with Selvi and there are many interesting sequences when they meet.

As it is already said that screenplay is the key to this film, there needs to be a special mention about events happening on a single day. The day starts off with Jai getting ready in the morning and goes eagerly for playing cricket and gets dejected after having found that he is not in the Rockers' team. Adding to the wound is the quarrel with SHARKS team after Imran breaks the photo frame in Jai's house. SHARKS team after having spoilt their mood with Jai, decide to booze and realize that none of them have bucks for boozing. They decide to make money through a bet match (idea given by Ilavarasu's assistant) and finally play a bet match with young school boys. This match is a real funny and a superb match. These sequences in a day are so natural and interesting. Good work by Venkat and Shakthi Saravanan…Keep it up!

Finally the tournament arrives, and our boys this time had to meet ROCKERS in Semi-final itself and that too with Captain RJ Shiva not playing for the team as he is in the hospital recovering from injury. Whether SHARKS beat ROCKERS in Semi-finals and enter finals to lift the Radio Mirchi 2006 Cricket tournament Cup is the climax of the movie.

Venkat Prabhu's debut film is the real summer treat for all of us. An apt casting, subtle comedy, natural lighting, tailor-made music, great background score and a perfect direction are the highlights of Chennai 600028.

One question that arises in everyone's mind would be – Venkat, is there any sequel to Chennai 600028? After Munna Bhai MBBS, this is one movie that can be thoroughly enjoyed by people of all generations.
Bottomline: A must watch for all cricket fans and a great entertainer for all movie buffs and all non-movie goers too!
