Its
International women’s day today
and we wish all women a very happy
woman’s day. In today’s
cinemas there is general opinion that
heroines just add to the glamour quotient
and run around the trees romancing
the heroes. In the midst of all these,
we still have ladies in Tamil cinemas
who remain etched in our hearts for
their work. |
|
|
|
|
Let
us take a look at some of the women who took Tamil
movies to next level. |
|
|
We
start with Padmini fondly known as Puppy
amma in the filmi circles. It was director’s
delight to have Padmini in their movies.
Padmini won accolades not only for her acting
but also for her dancing talent. Being a
classic dancer herself, she won many hearts
with her performance in “Thillana
Mohanambal”. There were times when
directors would wait for the call sheets
of this wonderful actress and also went
to the extent of postponing their work.
Banumathy was the other yesteryear actress
who ruled the roost in Tamil cinemas in
her prime time. She also had tried her hands
in direction.
We had movies like “Aval Oru Thodarkathai”
and “Aval apadithain” bring
the best out of the heroines. “Aval
Oru Thodarkathai” would always be
remembered for Sujatha’s role. Who
can forget the song “Theivam Thanta
Veedu” from the movie which was a
turning point in Yesudas’s career.
“Aval apadithain” brought the
best of Sri Priya.

|
When
it comes to play back singing, P.Susheela, S.Janaki
and K.S.Chitra have always remained the godmothers
of the young upcoming singers. The trio has won
lots of awards and accolades. Chitra has won six
national awards in addition to Susheela’s
five and Janaki’s four. |

Manorama
popularly known as “Aachi” is
one of the few lady comedy artists to have
thrived for very long time. Manorama has
the unique record of acting in more than
1000 movies. Right from M.G.Ramachandran
to today’s Vishal, Aachi has acted
with all actors and has a special place
in the hearts of Tamil movie fans. Manorama
has also sung few songs in her movies. The
one that comes to mind immediately is “Delhi
ku rajanallum” from “Paati Sollai
Thattathey”.
The
name Suhasini and Revathy brings us to mind
performance oriented characters. They were
both not willing to take up glamour. Who
could ever forget the Sindhu of “Sindhu
Bairavi” and Divya of “Mauna
Raagam”? Even after their acting career
as heroines ended, they went behind the
screen. They also have lent their voices
to the current crop of heroines. |
|
|
|
Who can forget Revathy’s performance in
“Magalir Mattum” which also had Oorvasi
and Rohini performing well. |
|
|
One
of the finest directors who always have
importance to his heroines is Bhakyaraj.
His movie “China Veedu” had
Kalpana playing a prominent role. He also
had Oorvasi play an important character
in the movie “Munthanai Mudichu”.
We also had Priyadarshan trying a script
under the title “Snehithiya”
with importance to lady artists.
In contemporary times, we have lyricist
Thamarai and director V.Priya leading the
charge of young pack of ladies in Tamil
cinema. Thamarai has made her pen do all
the talking in movies that has captured
the imagination of movie lovers. Priya through
her only movie “Kanda Naal Muthal”
has certainly got the attention of Kollywood.
In the recent movies, Jyothika’s performance
as Archana in Mozhi and Priyamani as Muthazhagu
in Paruthiveeran has won praise and accolades
from all quarters. |

|
We hope many such characters come up in Tamil
cinemas. We wish all the women readers very happy
women’s day. |
