Ban sought for ‘Uyir’ on the grounds of cultural sabotage
Uyir
It was probably prophetic when we said in the review of this film, a couple of days back, that it sure is going to kick off some controversy. As predicted, since the film was released, it has caused quite a stir among audiences, bringing with it huge amounts of criticisms, even while people credit the film for attempting such a bold theme.

The film portrays a woman's obsession with her brother-in-law, soon after her husband's death.
Srikanth plays the role of the brother-in-law, who comes to stay with his brother's family after he finishes his education. Sangeetha, the sister-in-law, shares a special bond with Srikanth, which turns to lust and obsession after her husband commits suicide. So much so, she even tries to thwart Srikanth's love for Samvrutha.

While the film has been garnering in rave reviews, some sects in the state question the credibility of such a film, falling back on the age-old adage of cultural heritage.

They question that in a state like Tamil Nadu that is rich in its cultural heritage such films should not be released as it mars the reputation of the state of maintaining long-lasting family values.

The film's promo itself used the line "Annan Wife is half wife" (meaning that the wife of the elder brother is half a wife to the younger brother).
Even the state police seem to have objected to this dialogue, and have submitted a petition to the Censor Board to remove the dialogue. However, the request has been turned down.

Now, some organizations and political parties like Hindu Makkal Katchi and All India Democratic Women's federation have also condemned the movie and have requested a ban on the film.

They have written a letter to the Censor Board condemning the certification for the movie. And they have also requested Chief Minister Karunanidhi to ban Uyir and end the matter.
