Russia strongly opposed Ukraine's decision to join the European Union. Following this, Vladimir Putin declared war on Ukraine on February 24.
This is followed by a fierce battle between the Russian military and Ukrainian security forces in Ukraine. The United Nations says more than a thousand people have been killed and many more injured. Ukraine also claims that 30 million people have so far sought refuge in neighboring countries as a result of the war.
The Chernobyl nuclear reactor is located in northern Ukraine. The nuclear reactor was built in this area when Ukraine was in the Soviet Union. This was followed by two nuclear reactors that exploded on April 26, 1986. This is the biggest nuclear accident that has ever happened to mankind. Although the reactor is not currently operational, its nuclear fuels are safely preserved.
In this context, Ukraine has accused Russian forces of stockpiling weapons near the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. In addition, the Ukrainian government has warned that any accident near the nuclear reactor could wreak havoc across Europe.
In a statement, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk said, "Russia has weapons very close to the Chernobyl nuclear reactor. It will lead to disaster, so Russian forces must leave the city immediately. "
She also demanded that the United Nations intervene in the matter. Ukraine's statement that the Chernobyl nuclear reactor could explode at any time has alarmed the whole of Europe.
