Hurricane Laura has recently strengthened into a powerful storm and is now in category 4. It has hit the Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday. The warnings which have been issued so far state that the storm is “unsurvivable” and the storm could surge up to 20 feet or six meters. According to media reports, thousands of residents in the coastal areas of Louisiana and Texas have been evacuated. 

The National Hurricane Center in Miami has announced that Hurricane Laura is packing winds of 140 miles per hour (220 kilometers per hour) and is likely to make landfall along the Gulf Coast. 

“As an extremely dangerous Category 4 hurricane -- the second-highest on the Saffir-Simpson wind scale -- Laura could pummel the Louisiana and Texas coast with storm surge, extreme winds and flash flooding, the NHC said,” Hindustan Times mentioned in its report. 

The hurricane has already caused and is likely to cause catastrophic damage from Sea Rim State Park, Texas, to Intracoastal City, Louisiana. 

“The power of Hurricane Laura is unprecedented, and Texans must take action now to get out of harm’s way and protect themselves,” Texas Governor Greg Abbott said.

“The conditions of this storm are unsurvivable, and I urge southeast Texans to take advantage of these final few hours to evacuate.” 

“Your property can be replaced. Your life cannot be replaced,” he added.

President Donald Trump instructed residents in the path of the storm to “listen to local officials.”

“Hurricane Laura is a very dangerous and rapidly intensifying hurricane. My Administration remains fully engaged with state & local emergency managers,” Trump tweeted.

Hurricane Laura has already caused flooding in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The death toll was reported to be above 25. In Cuba, it caused material damage but did not cause deaths. 

The Atlantic storm season runs through the month of November. The NHC predicted almost 25 storms out of which Laura is the 12th so far.
