Sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate banned in Hawaii

Hawaii recently passed a new law banning the use of chemical sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate. According to reports, the harmful components in the sunscreen wash off in the sea and cause damage to the corals. Reportedly, 14,000 tons of sunscreen gets washed off into the sea each year.

Oxybenzone is harmful to corals, algae, fish and mammals. Reportedly, just a drop in 4 million gallons of water is highly toxic. Hawaii's new law will ensure chemical sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate will not be used. The law will be put into action from Jan 1, 2021.
