A week after the highly destructive Easter Sunday bombings in Sri Lanka shocked the nation, the country has completely banned all face covering including the burqa. This decision was approved and announced by Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena on Sunday through a press release.

According to NDTV reports, the President's office said in a statement "The ban is to ensure national security... No one should obscure their faces to make identification difficult". President Maithripala Sirisena took this decision to further support the ongoing security and help the armed forces to easily identify the identity of any wanted perpetrators'.

On April 21, nine suicide bombers carried out a series of devastating blasts that tore through three churches and three luxury hotels on the Easter Sunday, killing 253 people. To which, the Islamic State claimed the attacks, but the government has blamed local Islamist extremist group National Thowheeth Jamaath (NTJ) for the attacks.

Media reports further state that, Sri Lanka has been on high alert since Easter, with about 10,000 military soldiers being deployed throughout the country. Commercial establishments, church services as well as schools and universities are shut.
