RISHI SUNAK, INFOSYS’S NARAYANA MURTHY’S SON-IN-LAW IS UK’S FINANCE MINISTER
Home > News Shots > WorldIndian-origin Rishi Sunak has been appointed as the new finance minister of the Boris Johnson-led UK government, replacing Sajid Javid who resigned from the post of Chancellor of the Exchequer in a surprise move during the recent ministerial reshuffle by the Prime Minister.
Sunak is married to Akshata Murthy, daughter of Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy. The couple has two daughters. Affiliated with the British Conservative Party, Sunak has been a Member of Parliament for Richmond (Yorks) since October 2014.
Before this appointment came through, Sunak was the second in command to the finance minister as the Chief Secretary to the Treasury and oversaw public spending.
He earlier worked as an analyst with Goldman Sachs, later with a hedge fund and eventually set up an investment firm. Sunak was also a director in Murthy's investment firm, Catamaran Ventures.
Sunak's father was a doctor and his mother ran a chemist shop. He attended the Winchester College before studying Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford University. He also holds an MBA from Stanford University as a Fulbright scholar. His hobbies include keeping fit, cricket, football and watching films.
Widely regarded as a rising star in the Conservative Party, Sunak is known for his regular media interviews on behalf of the government and had even stood in for Johnson in some television debates during last year's election campaign.
