As the global death toll inches closer to 100,000, among them more than 100 Italian doctors have died of the novel coronavirus since the pandemic reached the country in February.
As per Italy's main doctors' association a spokesperson for the association told news agency AFP, "the number of doctors who have died because of Covid-19 is 100, perhaps even more at the moment, unfortunately."
"We can no longer allow our doctors, our health workers, to be sent to fight without any protection against the virus," the association's president Filippo Anelli said.
While taking a look at the count, the toll includes retired doctors, who were called in a month ago to help fight the coronavirus. Looking at the current stats, Italy has officially claimed a world-topping 17,669 lives. Meanwhile, Italy's local media reports that 30 nurses and nursing assistance have also died of Covid-19.
Currently, the Italian government is working on how and when to ease social distancing measures that has been extended until April 13.
