With countries across the globe going under lockdown, people were glad to know that the air was improving and the ozone hole above the Antarctic was apparently healing. But, there is some sad and shocking news as a massive hole has opened up in the ozone layer above the Arctic.

Gigantic hole opened up in ozone layer over the Arctic

Seems like, the climate change which the Earth has been bearing for a while, now is the reason for it. The ozone layer is critical to sustain life on earth, it acts as a protective shield in the Earth’s stratosphere which absorbs most of the ultraviolet radiation from the sun.

As per a Fox New report, scientists blame low temperatures in the atmosphere above the north pole as a reason. Meanwhile, experts hope that the hole will disappear in the coming weeks and should not create any problems for humans.

The European Space Agency, in an official statement said, "scientists using data from the Copernicus Sentinel-5P satellite have noticed a strong reduction of ozone concentrations over the Arctic. Unusual atmospheric conditions, including freezing temperatures in the stratosphere, have led ozone levels to plummet—causing a 'mini-hole' in the ozone layer."

Meanwhile, scientists from the German Aerospace Center (DLR) state that "using data from the Tropomi instrument on the Copernicus Sentinel-5P satellite, they were able to monitor this Arctic ozone hole form in the atmosphere."

Without this layer, life will be difficult! Also, if in case this layer thins out or continues to form holes, then illnesses such as skin cancer and cataracts can occur.
