In a terrifying incident in Rome, a metro station escalator broke down leaving dozens injured. The incident took place on Tuesday night at the Repubblica station.
At least 24 people were injured and one left in serious condition following the incident. Reportedly, most of the victims were Russians who were in town for a Champions League match between CSKA Moscow and A.S. Roma. A video of the scary episode went viral on social media.
From the video, the escalator can be seen speeding before coming to an abrupt halt. The incident left people piled up at the bottom steps. Some people could be seen hurtling themselves to the centre railing to escape.
It has been reported that the escalator broke down after the fans collectively began to sing and dance on the staircase. Some fans were even seen dancing and jumping on the escalator. The metro station had to be closed following the incident.
