On Wednesday, Canada legalised recreational marijuana becoming the first major country in the world to do so. The move can alter the country's social, cultural and economic environment.
Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had earlier this year promised that cannabis will become legal mid-October. Though medical marijuana is already legal in Canada the drug was legalised on October 17. After Uruguay, Canada becomes the second country in the world to legalise marijuana.
According to Trudeau, legalising marijuana will "keep the money out of the pockets of organised crime." He was quoted by The Guardian, "Obviously the current approach – the current prohibition of marijuana – has not worked to protect our kids, to keep the money out of the pockets of organised crime and that’s why we’re bringing in a new legalised framework around marijuana."
