During the earlier days of cricket, only two stumps were used with a long bail on top. This scenario reportedly changed after May 23, 1775, following a local matched played in England. Reportedly, a bowler named Lumpy Stevens had bowled three deliveries that beat the batsman and passed through the stumps, without disturbing them or the bail. Since then, the third stump was then added to avoid such scenarios.
