According to reports, China has blocked Facebook-owned WhatsApp, which has experienced brief disruptions to service. Text messages are now completely blocked, while earlier users were unable to send video chats or photos. An applied cryptographer reportedly found that China may have recently upgraded its firewall to detect and block the NoiseSocket protocol that WhatsApp uses to send texts. Earlier, China reportedly blocked the HTTPS/TLS that WhatsApp uses to send photos and videos.
