A new WhatsApp scam has been spotted where an account pretending to be WhatsApp's technical team sends messages to users, asking to share their verification code over chat.
The matter came to light when a Twitter user shared the screenshot of the message he received and asked WAbetainfo to verify it.
The message in Spanish read: "We have sent you a request for identity verification to verify". The fake account even has the WhatsApp logo as its display picture to trick users into believing that the message has been sent by WhatsApp only.
In response, WAbetainfo said that the message is fake as WhatsApp never asks users for data or verification codes.
“This is #FAKE. WhatsApp doesn't message you on WhatsApp, and if they do (for global announcements, but it's soooo rare), a green verified indicator is visible. WhatsApp never asks your data or verification codes," WAbetainfo tweeted.
Though many would be able identify the scam, some would fall prey to it. WhatsApp's official account will have a green verification tick. There will also be no chat bar, which clearly means that you cannot reply the message.
