In 1991, a lower court sentenced a total of 25 people to life imprisonment for allegedly buying batteries for Perarivalan in connection with the assassination of Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
Following this, the maximum sentence of 7 persons, including Perarivalan, was reduced to life imprisonment.
Following this, Perarivalan asked the Supreme Court in 2016 to release him. He also said he would be granted bail. Perarivalan was granted bail in a bench comprising Justices L Nageshwara Rao and PR Kawai.
In this case, the trial of Perarivalan's release was held in the Supreme Court and ended on the 11th. Meanwhile, Supreme Court Justices L Nageshwara Rao, Bopanna and PR Kawai have ruled that Perarivalan should be released. As a result, Perarivalan was released after serving 31 years in prison.
The Supreme Court has exercised its power to enforce Section 142 of the case and acquitted. The judges noted that the governor had delayed the decision in this case and therefore the Supreme Court would give its verdict. Many political leaders have commented on Perarivalan's release thirty years later. After the release of Perarivalan, he spoke eloquently about the difficulties of his motherhood.
In this case, a video of Perarivalan talking about 4 years ago is now going viral. Speaking on that occasion, Perarivalan had said that he had been done wronged and that he had lost his youth and age.
