Photos of millions of fireflies simultaneously illuminating the jungle simultaneously in the Anaimalai jungle are spreading virally on social web sites.
Known by various names such as fireflies and lanterns, these bizarre glowing insects can emit light in a variety of colors, including light, yellow, pink, green, and red. Light is emitted from the back of the body as a chemical reaction takes place in their body.
Experts say that insects often emit light like this to attract their prey and mate and warn enemies. Living in humid tropical regions, these fireflies often inhabit forests.
A few days ago, millions of fireflies flocked to the Anaimalai Tiger Reserve in the Western Ghats. Experts call this the synchronous dance of fireflies. In 1999 and 2012, a similar fire dance of fireflies took place in the Anai Malai forest. Sri Ram Murali photographed this rare event in the Anaimalai Tiger Reserve a few days ago when millions of fireflies lit up simultaneously.
Environmentalists are happy that these fireflies' dances are a sign of the healthy environment in the forest.
Experts say that this light is produced due to the chemical reaction that takes place when fireflies combine oxygen with luciferin in their bodies. This rare sight usually appears in the months of April and May in the Anaimalai region. The phenomenon of these insects emitting bright light to attract mates has attracted many.
A photo taken by artist Sriram Murali during a synchronous dance of fireflies that turned night into day has now gone viral on social media.
