According to reports, the Supreme Court of India reduced the punishment for a woman and her lover, who killed the former's husband.
Reportedly, Ragila murdered her husband after he called her and their daughter a 'prostitute'. The husband, during a quarrel called Ragila a prostitute and accused her of turning their daughter into one as well. Ragila's lover, Nawaz tried to intervene but the husband refused to calm down. With no other option, the two murdered the husband.
The husband's body was found 40 days after Ragila confessed to a local teacher. A trial court in Tamil Nadu awarded the two life sentences but the Madras High Court upheld the sentence. The case went to the Supreme Court where the life sentence was reduced to 10 years in jail.
The bench of Justices M. Shantanagoudar and Dinesh Maheshwari reportedly stated, "In our society, no lady would like to hear such a word from her husband. Most importantly, she would not be ready to hear such a word against her daughters. The incident is a result of a sudden and grave provocation by the deceased."
