Banwarilal Purohit, 77, the newly appointed Tamil Nadu governor is a veteran political leader from Vidarbha district of Maharashtra. Purohit started his political career in 1977 and was elected to Maharashtra Assembly on a Congress ticket in 1979 and 1980. He was elected twice from Congress, in 1984 and 1989. He was ousted from Congress in 1991 and was elected once from BJP in 1996. Purohit, who was previously the Governor of Assam is currently the managing editor of English daily Hitavada.
