‘Vegetarian’ criteria for gold medal removed

Savitribai Phule Pune University reportedly suspended a circular stating that only vegetarians and teetotallers will be eligible for receiving gold medals on Saturday. The circular created an uproar following which the registrar said, “We have withdrawn the 10-year-old circular after objections were raised from various quarters.” Notably, the 2006 circular was issued for an endowment of Rs 1.2 lakh received from the Shelar family for instituting two gold medals to be awarded to top students in the university.
