The Chennai traffic police will be wearing "body cameras" from August 26 (Monday) for better traffic enforcement. According to TOI, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswamy will distribute more than 2000 cameras which will be used by the Chennai traffic police.

Reportedly, the initiative is taken to make police actions transparent with photographic evidence which will, in turn, reduce arguments and unwanted clashes with the public. The tiny microphone-fitted cameras will be worn by the traffic police officers which is expected to record all the minute details that can be reviewed later.

The evidence shots can be used to prove honesty or disprove allegations of misconduct and it can also be effectively deployed during police training exercises.  Reports say that 1000 cameras which are about 20% of the purchase value will be allocated to the Chennai Traffic Police comprising 219 inspectors and sub-inspectors.

The announcement to buy body cameras came last month and Palaniswamy had quoted that a total sum of 1 crore was sanctioned for the purpose. The women police will be given with a new set of 'Pink Beat' patrol vehicles which will be used exclusively to tackle crimes against women and children.

The pictures of pink Toyota Innova labelled with an 'Amma Patrol' sticker is already doing the rounds on social media. It looks like the Chennai Traffic Police have been given with extra privileges to nab violators especially bikers and their peers who cause terrible traffic distortion.
