The arrival of the Tamil month of Thai, considered to be auspicious for the conduction of weddings has caused a sharp increase in the number of child marriages taking place in Trichy. Authorities have stopped eight child marriages so far and speculate that the number could increase by the time the month ends. J Godwin Prem Singh, director of Childline was quoted as saying, “While 12 child marriages were stopped in January last year, this year’s figure could go up before Thai is over. Poverty-ridden parents are trying to sell kids. These girls are exploited at an early age.”
