Going against the order of the High Court on closure of liquor shops, Tamil Nadu government has made an appeal to the Supreme Court on the same. Last year, the SC had ruled saying that liquor shops along state and national highways need to be closed. Following this order, close to 3,000 such shops were closed in the state.
Further an order came stating that the shops can be re-opened if the state highways are announced as municipality roads. Post that, the Tamil Nadu government issued orders for about 1,700 shops to re-open.
When Madras High Court decided to review this, they said that shops that were opened in areas which weren’t converted into municipality roads must be shut shop again. The Tamil Nadu government has decided to contest this in the SC adding that close to Rs 5 crore revenue was lost. The plea of Tamil Nadu against the Madras HC order is likely to come up soon.
