According to reports, around 100 school students along with villagers were arrested on Wednesday for protesting against the oil well project by the ONGC in Karambakudi of Thiruvarur. ONGC stopped the project in 2016 due to intense protests from people. However, it reportedly resumed the work with police protection on February 9, which resulted in a protest on the next day. Anti-methane project movement leader professor K Jayaraman had filed a petition saying that the project is in progress without the sanction from the Pollution Control Board. However, the villagers along with school students staged a sit-in protest at the project site. They were arrested after they refused to disperse when the police held talks with them, reports added.
