The protest against the expansion of Sterlite copper plant in Thoothukudi reached 100th day on Tuesday and the people had attempted to lay siege to the district collectorate. However, police launched a lathicharge on the protesters when they attempted the siege despite the curfew order by the district collector.
While police started lathicharge, enraged protesters started pelting stones at the police personnel and police vehicles. The vehicles were damaged. While police were seen running fearing the stone pelting in one scene, another shows them chasing the stone pelters with lathicharge.
The city was almost stumbled due to the unrest that ensued after the police lathicharge. Protesters had gathered in large numbers. Meanwhile, villagers also gathered in large numbers and held a rally against the Sterlite plant.
