SHOES THROWN AT PERIYAR STATUES IN CHENNAI & TIRUPUR

On the occasion of social reformer and Dravidar Kazhagam founder Periyar E V Ramasamy's 140th birth anniversary, miscreants hurled shoes at two Periyar statues in Chennai and Tirupur.
A lawyer, identified as Jagadeesh, who is an alleged member of the BJP, threw shoes at the Periyar statue in Anna Salai when a group of members of the VCK were garlanding it today morning. The VCK members caught hold of the man and handed him over to the police. A case has been registered in the incident and the man has been taken into custody.
In a separate incident, unidentified men placed slippers on the head of a Periyar statue located outside a park in Dharampuram in the Tirupur district. Dravidar Kazhagam functionary K Shanmugam has lodged a complaint with the police. However, an FIR is yet to be registered.
DMK chief MK Stalin has condemned people vandalising statues of Periyar. In a statement issue by Stalin, he said that those who had thrown shoes or slippers at the statue should be punished.
