The Madras High Court on Tuesday rapped the Tamil Nadu government for cracking down on protests in the Marina beach while clarifying that the government has the authority to regulate protests, but not to ban them altogether. When questioned about the court’s move, Naam Tamilar Katchi chief coordinator Seeman said, “If you (government) don’t want protests, you should’ve given a ‘righteous, good and no-mess’ rule.” He also wondered why there are police if people are denied permission to protest and have to stay inside their homes. Police are there only to allow people to roam freely on the streets and protect them, Seeman added. He also accused the state government of thinking that the people should not get any thought of protest.
