SC orders interim stay on granting grace marks for NEET candidates

The Supreme Court on Friday ordered an interim stay on the grant of grace marks for Tamil Nadu candidates who took up NEET in Tamil. The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test was conducted on May 6 in 136 cities in 11 languages. However, due to translation errors, 49 questions were reportedly erroneous.

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court had ordered CBSE to grant the students who took up NEET in Tamil 196 marks - four marks for each of the 49 questions. However, CBSE was not willing to take the blame for the errors. It approached the SC to appeal against the Madras HC's order. CBSE argued that granting grace marks could lead to a chaotic situation.

CBSE reasoned that the ambiguity of the translation was the fault of translators. Following CBSE's appeal, the SC ordered an interim stay on the grant of grace marks.
