The Supreme Court on Friday ordered the Tamil Nadu government to reduce Mullaperiyar level by two-three feet and bring it to 139 feet.
Mullaperiyar has forever been a bone of contention between the two states - Kerala and Tamil Nadu regarding conflicting statements on the safety of the people living downstream.
Though the dam is located in Kerala, its control lies in the hands of the Tamil Nadu government and on Wednesday, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan wrote a letter to his TN counterpart Edappadi K Palaniswami requesting to ensure that the outflow in the dam was more than the inflow, considering the massive floods that have ravaged Kerala in the recent past.
