The stretch along the Marina beach in Kamarajar Salai has been covered with heavy police security following the police firing in Thoothukudi which killed at least 11 protesters. Police personnel were deployed in large numbers along the stretch which is used by Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami. Security has also been strengthened near the DGP office.
The move has been taken following expectations that people may gather to protest the police firing. Political leaders and activists have condemned the attack. Congress President Rahul Gandhi slammed the firing and termed it “state sponsored terrorism”
The protest against demanding the closure of the Sterlite copper plant turned into a tragedy when police opened fire on protesters after they allegedly torched police vehicles and vandalised the vehicles in the district collectorate. Meanwhile, a section of leaders and activists speculated that the firing could be a pre-planned one.
