Out of the 32,000 food establishments in Chennai city, only 14,462 have reportedly been certified by the Food Safety Department. According to reports, Food Safety Commissioner P Amudha has given permission to crack down on establishments that fail to apply for licence by December 31. Of the over 15,000 establishments that don’t own a licence currently, failure to register or procure a licence will likely lead to forceful closure of shop, fines ranging from Rs 25,000 to Rs 10 lakh or imprisonment of up to six months.
