Five men were taken by a man to Chennai's Express Avenue Mall to clean the septic tank early in the morning. A 25-year-old youth Ranjithkumar, part of the crew, entered the tank first.
Due to the inhalation of poisonous gases, he fainted inside. Soon, his brother arunkumar followed and rescued him. However, it was too late and he died. His body was taken to government hospital for post mortem.
Cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin tweeted the news saying "Do we have enough precautionary devices to aid these hero’s? (sic)".
To which Sumanth Raman replied, "Manual scavenging is illegal. No question of giving them safety equipment etc. and allowing this to continue. This should not be done by humans. Robots need to do this. And people need to follow the law."
