Man seeks to ban prefix ‘Mahatma’ before Gandhi’s name

A research scholar named S Muruganantham filed a PIL in Madras High Court seeking direction to the Central government to refrain from using ‘Mahatma’ as a prefix before Gandhi’s name in currency notes. However, the court dismissed his petition, which contended that prefixing the title 'Mahatma' before the name of M K Gandhi amounts to the violation of the principle of equality. The court also reportedly slapped a cost of Rs 10,000 on the man and said this type of PILs consumed the valuable time of the judiciary.
