After a petition was filed by an advocate regarding the shut down of internet services in Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari, the Madras High Court intervened. On Friday, the Madras HC asked the Tamil Nadu government to restore internet services in the districts.
Anti-Sterlite protests have been taking place in Thoothukudi for more than 100 days now. However, the 100th day turned deadly for the protestors with heightened violence in the district. Police opened gunfire on the protestors, due to which 13 have died. The unrest in Thoothukudi led the government to cut internet services in Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari.
The move led the Madras HC to ask TN why internet services were suspended in Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari as well. Reportedly, the internet was restored in Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari, but it has still not yet been decided for Thoothukudi.
