Makkal Needhi Maiam founder Kamal Haasan on Monday wrote to Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit over the police firing in Thoothukudi which killed at least 13 persons. The letter urged the Governor to take necessary actions to ensure that the rights and lives of people in the state are not compromised “for the sake of petty political games”.
The Sterlite company blatantly violated the regulatory norms for operating the copper plant, the statement alleged. It further stated that the Supreme Court held that the company flouted the environmental safety rules and slapped a penalty of Rs 100 crore in 2013.
It also included crucial questions on the firing order and the weapons and ammunition approved and used for firing. The financial compensation to victims, the transfer of officials and the formation of inquiry commission are attempts by the state government to cover up its “unconstitutional actions”, the letter stated.
