The Madurai bench of Madras High Court reportedly ordered the closure of all sand quarries in the state within the next six months. Further, the court directed the installation of CCTV cameras to prevent sand theft. Considering the welfare of farmers and others, the court added that all sand demand should be met by means of import. Notably, the order was directed when the court heard a petition that sought the release of sand imported from Malaysia which was being held at Thoothukudi.
