Even as the bodies of the diseased were in the mortuaries, the kin of the diseased were reportedly not allowed to them.
The Intensive Care Unit ward of the hospital was crowded with the relatives of the victims. Families of the injured placed themselves wherever they found seats - on the stairs, on the floors, eagerly awaiting news about their relatives.
According to the hospital, as many as 70 people were rushed there with injuries for treatment, many with bullet injuries.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami defended the actions of the police saying that the cops decided to open fire only because the protests had turned violent. He further ordered a retired judge to probe into the incident.
