FIRE ENGULFS FOOD COMPANY NEAR CHENNAI, FOOD PRODUCTS WORTH RS 10 CR CHARRED

Fire engulfed the godown of a company manufacturing food items in Uthandi Kandigai near Ponneri in Tiruvallur district, say reports. Equipment and food items worth Rs 10 crore have been damaged in the fire. The fire, however, was extinguished after six hours of struggle.

Over 150 women from the surrounding areas are working with the company which produces food items from key ingredients such as rice, wheat and maida. The security guard at the company informed the manager after spotting the fire. The staff tried to bring the fire under control with the fire-extinguishing equipment available at the company.

While they didn’t succeed, over 50 firefighters from four fire stations rushed to the spot and extinguished the fire after six hours of struggle. Initial probe suggests that the fire could’ve been caused by an electric short circuit.
