Reports suggest that Chennai, nicknamed the ‘Detroit of India’, is at risk of losing its fame for being the manufacturing powerhouse of India as it faces competition from cities in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have huge tracts of rural land available, offer better governance, and are good at attracting investment and building infrastructure, say experts. Experts suggest that the government's push to have states compete for business and investments to promote a more balanced, sustainable growth across India may change the trend. Reports also suggest that political shifts and policies such as the GST have weakened the region's momentum, while remittances from workers in the Gulf has also seen a drop.
