The idea of building the second airport for Chennai over the years have been on a pause as the State Government and Airport Authority of India were looking for an alternate location. Reportedly, the Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha spoke about the need of having a greenfield airport for the city. Officials from the Ministry of Civil Aviation and AAI said they had been meeting the State government authorities and pushing them for the project at the earliest. According to media reports, Sriperumbudur will no longer be housing the second airport but may choose from other options like Walajabad, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur.
