While the current domestic terminal in Chennai remains unused due to maintenance and safety issues, the Airports Authority of India has approved the construction of a new domestic airport in Chennai. The estimated budget is reportedly Rs 2000 crore. The old terminal was constructed in 2013 with Rs 2000 crore, and after many instances related to safety issues, it was closed. The newly expanded terminal will reportedly accommodate at least 11,500 passengers. According to media reports, the current airport will be demolished and the new terminus will be built in it’s place.
