The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) recently submitted a report on the 2015 Chennai floods and claimed that it was man-made. The CSG reportedly stated that the government was not prepared to face the floods.
The report was tabled on Monday at the Assembly. It blamed the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) for allowing encroachment on water bodies. It also criticised the CMDA for not demarcating the floodplains clearly.
The report blamed the then Jayalalithaa government and said, "The government had an opportunity to store 0.268 tmc in the Chembarambakkam tank and 12,000 cusecs of discharge could have been maintained for six hours instead of releasing 20,960 to 29,000 cusecs."
The CAG also put up recommendations in the report to prevent such disasters from happening in the future.
