Director Bharathiraja had recently released a statement criticising actor-politician Rajinikanth for his Twitter statement on the protests that took place in Tamil Nadu against IPL matches. Rajinikanth had tweeted, "The worst form of violence in law and order situation is attack on uniformed personnel on duty. This form of violence has to be tackled immediately as it poses grave danger to our country."
Responding to his tweet, Bharathiraja released a statement saying, "What is the highest form of violence? Are my Tamil people who protested in a non-violent way aggressors?" Bharathiraja also called Rajinikanth the ambassador of Karnataka's saffron party.
