A report by The Hindu suggests that Ayirai meen (loach) may soon be officially announced as the state fish of Tamil Nadu. Dr S. Felix, Vice-Chancellor of Tamil Nadu Fisheries University, reportedly said, “We are discussing the formalities with the Director of Fisheries and other higher officials”. The Centre has asked all the states to identify their own official fish species, Dr Felix told The Hindu.
