Home > News Shots > Tamil NaduThe division of areas affected by Coronavirus into red, orange and green zones is garnering attention across the country. As per media reports, the prime minister in his latest interaction with Chief Ministers on 27th April hinted that the Lockdown might be extended in Red Zones.
The basic details about Red, Orange and Green Zone has been listed below:
Red Zones are areas that are severely affected by the Coronavirus outbreak. These districts or places are considered to be hotspots of the virus as per the guidelines issued by the Ministery of Health and Family Affairs (MOHFW).
A district is classified as a Red Zone (hotspots) if it contributes to more than 80% to the total number of positive cases in India, if it contributes to more than 80 % of cases in its own state or if the district has a doubling rate (Time taken for the initial number of registered case to double) which is less than four days. Major cities that have been classified as red zones in India include, Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
If a city falls into a red zone, it is further divided into different containment zones so that the spread of the virus could be monitored and effectively curbed.
Orange zones are areas and districts that have recorded a limited number of coronavirus cases and have not recorded a new rise in such cases. A hotspot district can get classified as an orange zone if no fresh cases are reported in 14 days.
If a hotspot does not report positive case in 28 days, they are declared as Green Zones. For example, if Chennai does not report a positive case in 14 days, it will be classified as an orange zone. After getting classified as an orange zone, if it does not record any case for another 14 days, it will come under green zone.
