PM Modi had announced the extension of the nationwide lockdown till May 03, to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus. Further, it has also been announced that certain areas with less number of infections will operate with some leniency. The other areas, known as the coronavirus hotspots are to operate under strict guidelines.

Despite segmenting the zones based on the number of infections, the Greater Chennai Corporation also made it mandatory to wear masks when people step out of their homes. In the absence of masks, strict actions will be taken despite the reason for the citizens’ commutation. Chennai as of April 14 has reported 205 cases. Royapuram has the highest number of positive cases, making it the greatest coronavirus hotspot. 31%  of the cases are from Anna Nagar, Kodambakkam, and Teynampet. Thiru-Vika-Nagar has also reported around 30 cases in Chennai.

Mostly, people who belong to 30-39 years of age in Chennai have been affected followed by those who belong between 40-59 years of age.

For timely updates, the Greater Chennai Corporation has introduced Corona Monitoring Application, through which residents can figure out if there are cases near their surrounding areas. If an area or locality has more than one positive case, then it will be barricaded by the police authorities. In Mandaveli-Mylapore-Santhome area, there is just one containment zone. Two other such zones are present on either side of Peters Road in Royappetah. In North Chennai, one containment area is identified to the west side of New Washermenpet and one in Ennore. A senior official commented on barricading such areas said, “People shouldn’t enter these areas for buying essentials even by mistake."

People who are in self-quarantine can also update this status on this app by clicking a picture of the sticker stuck to their door. The application has been downloaded 40,000 times as of Tuesday.
