"VIRAT KOHLI SAID ANIL KUMBLE WAS TOO MUCH OF A DISCIPLINARIAN, YOUNG PLAYERS WERE INTIMIDATED"
Home > News Shots > SportsThere have been some reports of controversy within the team when Anil Kumble was the coach of the Indian team.
Former India spinner Anil Kumble was appointed as the coach of the Indian cricket team during Virat Kohli's tenure.
At the time, the Indian team was managed by the BCCI Executive Committee, headed by Vinod Rai, appointed by the Supreme Court.
Controversy over Indian team
At that time, there was a fierce confrontation between Anil Kumble and Virat Kohli. Virat Kohli has been quoted daily as saying that Anil Kumble should step down as coach, sparking controversy at the time.
Kumble resigns
Following this, Kohli and Kumble were investigated separately and he resigned from his post, despite being told that Kumble could continue as coach. It was only after this that Ravi Shastri was appointed as the coach of the Indian team.
Disgruntled Indian team
Vinod Rai, who was the chairman of the BCCI executive committee at the time, has now published a book. It also covers issues related to the Kohli-Kumble problems. In it, he said, "In my conversations with the captain and team management, it was conveyed that Kumble was too much of a disciplinarian and hence the team members were not too happy with him."
Not worth anything
"I had spoken to Virat Kohli on the issue and he did mention that the younger members of the team felt intimidated by the way he worked with them,” Rai added. “We had long conversations with Kumble after he had returned from the UK. He was obviously upset about the manner in which the entire episode had panned out. He felt he had been unfairly treated and a captain or team should not be given so much importance. It was the duty of the coach to bring discipline and professionalism into the team and as a senior, his views should have been respected by the players,” Rai wrote.
Many cricket fans have been commenting on what happened to a high-ranking official in the Indian team about five years ago, as he now mentions in his book.
