The 2nd league match of the IPL series was played at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai yesterday. The Mumbai Indians, led by Rohit Sharma, and the Delhi Capitals, led by Rishabh Pant, clashed. Delhi won the toss and elected to bowl.
Batting first, Mumbai scored 177 for 5 in 20 overs. Wicketkeeper-batsman Ishant Kishn top-scored with 81 and Rohit Sharma with 41. For Delhi, Kuldeep Yadav took 3 wickets and Khalil Ahmed took 2 wickets.
Batting next, Delhi won by 4 wickets for 179 runs in 18.2 overs. Lalit Yadav top-scored with 48, followed by Axar Patel and Preity Zinta with 38 each. Mumbai have the worst record of losing a match in the first match of the IPL for the 10th consecutive year.
Similarly, in the match against Mumbai, there were only 2 foreign players in the Delhi team playing XI. Each team can employ a maximum of 4 foreign players. However, New Zealand's Tim Shepherd and West Indies' Rowman Powell were the only two players to feature in Delhi's playing XI.
This is the 2nd time in IPL history that 2 foreign players have been selected like this. During the 2011 match against Dhoni-led CSK, the Gautam Gambhir-led Kolkata Knight Riders used only two foreign players, South Africa's Jack Kallis and England's Ian Morgan.
Eleven years later, the Delhi team has adopted a similar strategy. Kolkata lost to CSK in the match. But it is noteworthy that Delhi beat Mumbai with only 2 foreign players.
