Akhtar dismisses Sachin
At each match, the fans surrounded the stadium and greeted their favorite players with aggression. Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar recalls on what happened to him after Sachin was dismissed by him in the 2008 IPL.
At the time, Tendulkar was the captain of the Mumbai Indians. On the other hand, Akhtar was part of the Kolkata team. Also, the team was captained by the current BCCI President Sourav Ganguly. Mumbai and Kolkata then clashed in a match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Akhtar dismissed Sachin in the first over itself.
Who told you to dismiss Sachin?
Speaking on the occasion, Akhtar said, "It was a beautiful ground and a fantastic atmosphere. Stadium was fully packed. But I dismissed Sachin Tendulkar in the first over itself and that was a huge mistake. Then I got a lot of abuses when I was at fine leg. Sourav Ganguly told me, 'Come to mid-wicket, these people will kill you. Who told you to dismiss Sachin? That too in Mumbai?"
Speaking about the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Akhtar said, "I worked a lot in Mumbai and got lots of love. I was happy because at Wankhede no one abused my country, no one passed any racist comments. The crowd at Wankhede was very passionte. I wish I played more games there."
