Young Indian cricketer and Delhi Capitals player Prithvi Shaw was banned from playing international cricket for 8 months for doping violation. He is currently nursing an injury he picked up during a match.
He had taken Terbutaline, a prohibited substance, which is commonly found in cough syrups to treat cold and cough.
The 19-year-old released a statement on Tuesday regarding the ban and said that he accepts the punishment and hopes other athletes won't neglect the protocol and consume over-the-counter medicines without proper checking.
"Out of my eagerness to play, I didn't follow the protocol of being careful in consuming basic over the counter cough syrup," said Shaw. "We as athletes need to be extremely careful in taking any medicine for the smallest of medical ailments even if the medicine is available over the counter," he continued.
He said that the "news has really shaken" him but he "accepts his fate with all sincerety (sic)." "I thank the BCCI for all the support and also my near and dear ones who have always stood by me. Cricket is my life and there is no bigger pride for me than playing for India or Mumbai & I will come out of this faster and stronger. Thank you again, everyone, for your support," he concluded.
